Moontower Comedy & Oddity Festival Day 2: Is Everyone Hungover?

Thursday, the Moontower Comedy & Oddity Festival ramped up with even more great big name events – Dana Carvey, Maria Bamford, Reggie Watts and Chris Hardwick.  And that’s a good explanation for the small, anemic audience at the 8:15 p.m. Comic Boom show featuring Bil Dwyer, Dustin Ybarra, Carmen Lynch, Joe DeRosa, Kurt Metzger, John Tole and a surprise set from Judah Friedlander. (Though I prefer my initial logic – everyone is hung over).

While everyone on the lineup handled the situation more than capably, only John Tole really connected with the audience for his full set.

For the late show, I wandered between Four Eyes, upstairs at The Parish, and Double Trouble at The Parish Underground. Four Eyes is literally a show with the theme, “Everyone on here wears glasses,” which was skewered quite admirably by both Dom Irrera and Andy Kindler. At Double Trouble, Moshe Kasher took full control of the intimate downstairs space for a really fantastic set.

Both shows finished up just in time for me to catch Godfrey closing out “Stream On” at New York, New York.  Wow. Just wow.  Seeing all that talent and charisma in such a small room was a little like staring at the sun.  Godfrey’s voices and impressions are amazing, but he doesn’t coast on that, he actually puts the work into setting them in the context of a really funny bit instead of some ludicrous construct that exists just to get to the voice.

Since I felt like I didn’t have nearly as much to report as on Day 1, I used the after-party to poll comedians on their favorite experiences at the festival so far. Sean Patton gamely replied, “This, right now. You asking me that, and making me feel like I matter!”

Brendon Walsh whipped out a photo of a dog and said, “Spending time with this guy.”  Then he chivalrously jumped in to answer on Emily Heller’s behalf. “I got this – it was running into me on the street today.”  Emily added, “Is it sad to say, ‘Staying in a hotel’?  because that’s been great, I’m couch surfing right now. But also the breakfast tacos and getting to perform in a church.  I haven’t been to church in like 10 years and I walked in and didn’t burst into flames, so…”

Kasher was most excited about the live “You Made It Weird” podcast, which he co-hosted with Pete Holmes. I never got the chance to pose the question to John Tole and Kyle Kinane, because they were locked in an impassioned conversation about family and religion and other deep and serious topics.  But Kyle answered anyway, as they were closing down the bar, “I love that. I love having that kind of conversation.  You always worry the problem with these comedy gatherings is that everyone will always be on and always trying to be the funniest. But that, and with DeRosa yesterday, I have had some great, serious conversations here.”
